LITFSI Electrolyte Battery Electrolyte
Oct 31, 2018

Rechargeable Li-ion batteries have been widely developed in various commercial fields, and are excellent candidates for energy storage systems of electric vehicles and electronics applications. In recent years, the need for high performances lithium-ion batteries has increased dramatically for use in electric vehicles (EVs) and hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs). Using cathodes working at high voltage (>4.5V vs. Li/Li+) is a way to increase the energy densities of batteries but alkyl carbonates commonly used as electrolyte solvents are not stable towards oxidation at these high potentials, hence limiting the battery’s cycle life.

One of the most important challenges for further development of Li batteries for electric vehicles is safety, which requires the development of nonflammable electrolytes with no impact on the electrochemical window, cycle lifetime and stored energy.

Considerable research efforts in Li-ion battery technologies have already been done in order to find alternative electrolyte solvents.

LITFSI Electrolyte

LiTFSI (lithium bis-trifluoromethanesulfonimide) is the lithium salt market reference with outstanding electrochemical properties, high stability (chemical and thermal) that ensure safety and performance to its main end-use applications: electrical vehicles, e-bikes, flat panel screens, smartphone, laptop & powertools.

LiTFSI (or TFSILi) is a key component for Li-ion battery in liquid electrolyte as well as solid electrolyte (LMP batteries) with high ionic conductivity and chemical /thermal stability providing:

1) High battery performance

2) High intrinsic safety thanks to  its chemical and thermal stability .

3) Reduced battery cost over its lifetime.

4) No aluminium corrosion.

5) Reduced battery filling time with LITFSI used as separator coating.

LITFSI and its derivatives, such as ionic liquid, acts as antistatic agent in polymer matrix for:

1) Liquid crystal display (LCD) : Protective films (ITO), Polarizer component (PSA films).

2) Electrochromic display (ECD).

3) OLED
